History of Allen Forest Zoo Kanpur

The forested area was developed during the British rule in the early 1900s by Mr. George Burney Allen, a famous British industrialist of Kanpur. He also constructed a lake and a rest house on its banks. Later, the entire forest (including the lake) was taken into government possession.

The construction of the Allen Forest Zoo started in the year 1971, and it opened to the public on February 4, 1974. Initially, 10 enclosures were proposed, which were constructed by the year 1975-76. Since then, this zoological park has played an important role in the care of wildlife.

Many more animal enclosures were added later, along with other developmental works. The lake has been a centre of attraction since the beginning.

Architecture of Allen Forest Zoo

This Kanpur Zoo is spread over an area of over 75 hectares of lush green Allen Forest. The enclosures are designed in a way that they have ample greenery, and the animals feel at home. Feeding houses are also constructed in the enclosures of dangerous animals.

Even with all its wildlife enclosures, buildings and roads, Kanpur Zoo looks like a dense forest. The animals have been put in open and moated enclosures. They have space for animals to move around and help express their biological and physiological needs.

The animal enclosures are well spread along the lake on either side of a 9 km long road. They’re screened by terrain in a way that they’re invisible from each other. The zoo has a vast untouched area, ensuring that the natural look of Allen Forest isn’t disturbed, and its natural topography and floral richness are fully utilised.
