History of Massacre Ghat Kanpur
Massacre Ghat is deeply tied to the violent events during the Siege of Cawnpore in 1857. Over 300 British men, women and children were brutally killed by rebels said to be led by Nana Saheb.
In the light of the Indian Rebellion, Nana Saheb offered safe passage to the English families. They were promised boats on the Ganga to carry them to Allahabad. Nana Saheb also instructed his men that no one was to be harmed.
However, as the boats began to move, news arrived from Banaras that a British commander had killed many innocent Indians. Enraged, the Indian rebels started firing on the boats on the ghat. And the Englishmen who survived the bullets were slaughtered with swords.
In those days, this ghat was referred to as Sati Chaura Ghat. It was changed to Massacre Ghat following the massacre, under the orders of General Havelock.
