Jajmau (also known as Jajesmow during British colonial rule) is an industrial suburb of Kanpur, renowned for its leather industry. Essentially, it’s a small locality based around a popular excavation site. And it’s often referred to as Jajmau ka Tila (meaning mound of Jajmau). Jajmau is also home to several ancient temples and mosques.

It’s said to be one of the oldest sites in Kanpur to have human habitation. Its grounds tell stories from different chapters of Indian history. The sight of chimneys and factories, however, contrasts sharply with its historical aura.

Historical findings suggest that Jajmau has been a centre for human activity since the Vedic period. And it’s said to be once known as Siddhapuri. It’s believed to belong to King Yayati, a Puranic king from the Mahabharata.

Jajmau gained significance during the colonial era in India, when it became a hub of leather manufacturing. Today, it contributes nearly 30% of India’s leather exports, with tanneries producing all kinds of leather products, from shoes to furniture.
