History of Nana Rao Smarak Park

Nana Rao Smarak Park was the site of the Bibighar massacre, where around 200 British women and children were killed. It’s said to be instigated by a courtesan in Nana Sahib’s court. British forces then carried out brutal measures against the local population. A memorial well was built, along with a marble Gothic screen, funded by forcibly collected public money as punishment.

After India gained independence in 1947, this park was planned to commemorate Indian freedom fighters. The memorial well was dismantled, and the accompanying marble screen was transferred to the Kanpur Memorial Church.
