History of Anandeshwar Temple Kanpur
While the precise history of Anandeshwar Temple is not known, it’s believed to date back several centuries. According to a legend, a cow named Anandi would often deposit her milk here. The cow’s owner then came with the villagers to find a Shivalinga underground. They couldn’t move it out, so they built a temple and named it Anandeshwar Mandir in honour of the cow.
The temple site is also mentioned in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. It’s believed that Karna used to perform penance and worship Shiva at this place.
The current temple is said to have been built by the Parmar kings. The structure has undergone multiple renovations over the years (the most recent in the 18th century), yet it retains its ancient charm and spiritual significance.
