Valmiki Ashram Kanpur history is deeply rooted in the epic Ramayana. It’s believed to be the very place where Goddess Sita resided during her exile and gave birth to her twin sons, Luv and Kush. Their reunion with Lord Rama took place in this ashram, when they caught the sacrificial horse of the Ashwamedha Yajna and imprisoned Lakshmana and Hanuman.
As per legend, this ashram is also the place for Sita’s Patal Parvesh, where she entered Mother Earth. All these tales add to the mystique surrounding Valmiki Ashram, attracting devotees and history enthusiasts alike. The present structure of the Valmiki Temple in the complex is said to have been built by Baji Rao Peshwa in the 19th century.

1. Visiting Ashram temples – Valmiki Ashram sits atop a hillock, accessible through 48 steps, often referred to as the “Stairway to Heaven.” It’s home to three serene temples, including one with an idol of Maharishi Valmiki himself. The other two are dedicated to Luv-Kush and Goddess Sita. Each temple carries deep spiritual importance, creating a sacred atmosphere.
2. Exploring Sita Kund and Sita Rasoi – The ashram houses the holy Sita Kund, believed to have been the water source for those residing in the ashram. Close by is Sita Rasoi, said to be the place where Goddess Sita prepared meals. 3. Checking out other attractions – The ashram has some trees believed to be centuries old. One revered tree is said to be the very spot where Maharishi Valmiki imparted spiritual teachings to Luv and Kush. Apart from that, the tall Deep Malika Stambha is an impressive tower with niches for oil lamps. It also has a vantage point for panoramic views of the ashram and the city beyond. The ashram is open from 6 AM to 6 PM, allowing you ample time to experience its peaceful environment. Visit it in the evening for a comfortable tour. It takes around an hour to explore the complex. Winter (November – February) is the best season for a trip.
