History of Bithoor Kanpur
According to legends, Bithoor was the site where Brahma’s Ashwamedha Yajna was performed. It was referred to as the Utpalaranya forest. It then came to be known as Brahmavart Ghat (the seat of Brahma) due to this yajna. The first humans, Manu and Shatarupa, are believed to have been created in the Brahmavart Ghat.
The town finds mention in the Hindu epic Ramayana as well, as the place where sage Valmiki composed it. And it’s also believed that Goddess Sita lived here during her exile and gave birth to her sons, Luv and Kush.
In recent Indian history, Bithoor became a centre of Maratha history. This is where the last Peshwa, Baji Rao II, was banished. His adopted son, Nana Sahib, made this town his headquarters. Rani of Jhansi, Lakshmi Bai, also spent part of her childhood here.
During the British rule, this town used to be a part of Cawnpore (present-day Kanpur). Nana Saheb and his generals started their 1857 revolt from here, near the premises of Bithoor Fort. This siege of Cawnpore and its aftermath resulted in mass killings and destruction. The ruins of the fort and memorials today have kept Bithoor’s history alive.
