Kanpur Sangrahalaya (or Kanpur Museum) is a treasure trove of artefacts and exhibits about the city’s history. It narrates the story of Kanpur’s past and the people who influenced it. The museum highlights events from India’s freedom struggle and displays various relics of its colonial heritage. It also houses rare artefacts that provide a glimpse of industrial and cultural growth.

With loads of interesting tales, Kanpur Sangrahalaya is one of the most visited attractions of the city. Its engaging displays and wealth of information appeal to both children and adults. Among its prized collections is an artillery gun from the colonial era.

Where is Kanpur Sangrahalaya?

Kanpur Museum is located in Bithoor, near the Nana Rao Peshwa Memorial Park. It’s more than a historic landmark displaying a set of historical items. Set against the backdrop of the 1857 uprising, the museum brings history alive.

History of Kanpur Sangrahalaya

Kanpur Museum’s history goes back to the colonial era, when European merchants longed for a recreation hall. The construction started in the present-day Phool Bagh park. After the death of King Edward VII in 1910, the hall was dedicated to his memory as King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hall, commemorating his 1876 visit to Cawnpore (present-day Kanpur).

However, before the hall became a venue for cultural gatherings, it was used to house wounded World War soldiers and then, as an orthopaedic rehabilitation hospital. In 1999, it was converted into Kanpur Sangrahalaya.

Later, this museum was relocated to Nana Rao Peshwa Park in Bithoor. It placed the museum within the very landscape that had witnessed the uprising of 1857.

Things to do at Kanpur Bithoor Museum

1. Exploring the freedom movement exhibits – The prime attraction of Bithoor Museum is its collection from the Indian Independence struggle. From the First War of Independence in 1857 to the final years before 1947, the museum has several exhibits. Its galleries include the books and poetry of the freedom fighters, along with their pistols and apparel. A colonial-era artillery gun is the highlight of the collection.

2. Tracing Kanpur’s historic progress – Beyond its political history, Kanpur Sangrahalaya has also documented this region’s industrial and cultural progress. It helps understand Kanpur’s role as a hub of trade, commerce and culture during colonial times. Through textiles, ornaments and other paraphernalia, it shows how this city has evolved over the centuries.

3. Exploring Nana Rao Peshwa Memorial Park – The museum stands close to this historic park in Bithoor. The place has lush lawns, statues of freedom fighters, boating and vast family-friendly spaces. At its heart stands Nana Saheb Peshwa’s statue under an elegant canopy. It’s a powerful reminder of 1857.
